Simrishamn is a harbour town with more than 900 years of history. It was first mentioned in medieval sources in the 1100s and grew as a fishing and trading settlement on the Österlen coast, helped by the rich herring fisheries of the Middle Ages. Fish is still an important part of local food culture and identity, even though the fishing industry is smaller than it once was. Today, Simrishamn is known for its historic streets, colourful houses, working harbour, and as a welcoming base for exploring Österlen’s beaches, villages, art, food and countryside.
